50+ Writing Challenge 2017 Winning Entries

The 50+ Writing Challenge  2017 Awards Ceremony was held July 6, 2017 where the winners of the contest were announced. This was the culmination of  a year's effort to encourage local mature adults to capture their thoughts and memories on paper. We held writers' workshops & fireside chats to help provide inspiration and encouragement for those who were new to this creative endeavour, and then asked those interested to submit original works in one of four categories: A Canadian Memory; Poetry; Reminiscence; & Short Story. In total, 47 works were submitted.

A big thanks goes to the Okotoks Library Board for making this contest possible through the provision of a Canadian Government New Horizons for Seniors Program grant. We would also not have been able to host this contest without the voluntary efforts of the the Write Away! Writers Group who organized the contest rules and judged the entries.

And the 2017 winners are:

  • A Canadian Memory: A Flight Recalled by Derek Lovlin
    • Honourable Mention - Clear and Cold by Karen Pryznyk
