Indie Author Day: Fran Porter

Born in Middlesex England, Fran came to Canada with her parents and brother at the age of five. She met and married her husband Andy in Hamilton Ontario, where they both grew up, and they moved to Calgary because Andy is a geologist. Fran taught high school for 25 years for the Foothills School Division, just south of the city. Both retired in 2000.

The book When the Ship has no Stabilizers was written by Fran in an effort to come to grips with their daughter Colleen’s untimely death. Severely afflicted with borderline personality disorder, Colleen took her own life in June of 2010. Since its publication in 2014, the book has several times made the Calgary Herald local Bestseller List, and has been responsible, to date, for raising approximately $50,000 to fund a BPD treatment clinic at McMan Centre, Calgary.
